With nothing better to do one day, we began wondering why we named the greyhound "George" but the white cat "Asheville." The reason, of course, is that the greyhound's litter name was "Greasy" (he came from a peanut butter litter) and we could not bring ourselves to call the poor greyhound "Greasy. "George" had the relavent G R and E. The cat was named for Asheville, North Carolina, because that's where they started closing the interstate the day we drove home through a snow storm, just to get her in time for Christmas. This daliance led to thinking about why some pets have very people names and others have very not-people names. Thus, with nothing better to do, we began collecting pet names...and now we have a list. We've compiled over 800 names which have been given to actual pets. Some of those actual pets are actual fictional pets, such as the cartoon Jetson's Astro and the famed Koko and Yum-Yum of The Cat Who mysteries. Others were collected from friends and relatives, from rescue groups (who go through a lot of names), Presidential pets and pets of famous people. While most names are attached to cats and dogs, some have come from ferrets, racoons, horses, birds and fish. Please enjoy this list of pet names.
